Citizen Science Project: Javan Bulls' Population in Baluran National Park

Baluran National Park is one of 54 national parks in Indonesia. Baluran national park is located  Situbondo. Many people call this national park "a little Africa Van Java" because the scenery served in this national park resembles the savanna in Africa. In this national park there are many species of flora and fauna, one of which is the Javan bull. The Javan bull is one of the protected animals because it is endangered. Quoted from the website of Baluran national park (balurannationalpark.com) bull population figures in 2020 there are about 200 bulls.

According to the problem above, as one of the ranger earth optimism, I want to create a citizen science project in collaboration with the Baluran National Park to increase the population of Javan bulls that have had good development in the past 5 years. This project aims to find out the current number of java bull population contained in the national park. In addition to working with the national park, the project will also use data from volunteers interested in this topic.

This project will use a motion sensor camera placed at several points. This camera will serve to record the activity of bulls whose data can also be used for other research. In addition, this camera will also be one of the tools to calculate the number of bull populations. Data from visitors that may be used for data processing can also be sent via email later. In addition, so that more people know about this project, this project will be uploaded on social media such as Instagram and Twitter so that more volunteers participate in this project. With the final result in the form of articles, it is expected to be new information for the public.

  1. this project really helps this national park, because knowing the number of these bulls will really help them. maybe by knowing this amount is less or more, if less maybe there are some steps that will be taken to solve this problem. but if the amount is excessive, maybe it can be distributed to other national parks that lack the number of bulls so that this park can also be balanced. I totally agree with this project. I wonder if this bull can be eaten huh? if so, maybe if the amount is excessive it can be eaten :D

  2. This project will be a very good program and have a big impact, especially for the sustainability of the National Park of Java. Furthermore, this will also be very helpful for Baluran National Park in enriching the data and population of the bull. The use of tools that are not arbitrary will certainly be a bit challenging in this project, namely the use of cameras that have certain sensor capabilities. In my imagination, I see this project as a national geographic channel program. my imagination imagines there will be narration filling the whole video. And I hope the one who will fill the voice is you wkwkwk

  3. Glad to hear the successful development of Javan Bull these past 5 years! Such a brilliant idea to keep an eye on Javan Bull in Baluran to bring more successful development. I always want to visit Baluran one day, and meet the Javan Bull myself. But hasn’t got the opportunity😭. I thought that the bull population is not endangered, but it is endangered! Thank you for the information ranger!

  4. Once, I had an opportunity to visit this place 4 years ago, what I know is only recreation place but behind that there are still a lot of fact about this Baluran park. What you wrote, just simplify that apart from being a tourist attraction, Baluran National Park is also a nature conservation area for research, scientific, educational, and cultivation purposes. is it that Baluran is the oldest national park in Indonesia? and I know that your project will be so much excellent here.

You provided us with different visuals , making me thinking should I read again about this amazing park. and this is what I have got . Baluran National Park consists of several types of vegetation or regional contours, including savanna vegetation types, mangrove forests, seasonal forests, coastal forests, swamp forests and mountain forests. However, it is the savanna vegetation type that dominates this national park area with a total of about 40 percent of the total land area. That is why it looks like Africa hahah ...Thank you
